Buddhism Blog Assignment #1

Clips are from the movie "Eat, Pray, Love" starring Julia Roberts

In this parody of the movie trailer for “Eat, Pray, Love,” a Buddhist monk has left behind his entire life to follow his only goal of finding Julia Roberts.  I think that this is stereotyping the Buddhist religion in general because it essentially depicts them as impractical and unrealistic. Everyone follows a certain path with a specific goal, but this clip exaggerates the idea by showing him going to extreme lengths to achieve a seemingly meaningless goal that he takes very seriously. He even explains that this is his “life’s responsibility.”

In the very beginning of the trailer, there is a clip of the monk lying down on his stomach bowing before a decorated shrine. There continue to be clips of various rituals, such as the monks on top of a mountain placing things into a large fire. The music in the background seems to be less serious, implying that these dramatic rituals are being made fun of.

  1. When I first watched this I was really confused because I had never seen the movie...and I didn't realize it was a parody ha! I think it is a very false stereotype that is so far off the from the truth that it is just wrong. There are no goals in zen buddhism. A monk would never ever do that. ever. unless he wasn't a monk. Maybe I just don't get it but I think this clip took buddhism to another level...that which is a non-buddhism ha.

  2. This is really funny and Rachel is right, their is no way a monk would go across the country just to find a person...especially Julia Roberts haha. Enlightment isnt achievable through one goal or one's "life responsibility". It's a process that requires dedication and time, not a quest to find a special person. haha
